AED Resources
Before purchasing an AED Departments must coordinate with Occupational Health & Safety before purchasing or installing an AED.
Departments and units should contact Occupational Health & Safety and submit an AED request before purchasing or installing an AED.
This ensures:
• Appropriate placement and coverage for your location
• Clear assignment of maintenance responsibilities
• Proper training expectations for personnel
• Alignment with university and regulatory requirements
OHS will review each request using a standardized, risk-based evaluation process. Use the AED Inquiry Request Form above to begin the process.
Why OHS reviews AED requests
Occupational Health & Safety reviews AED requests to ensure devices are placed appropriately and managed effectively.
OHS helps ensure AEDs are:
• Installed in visible and accessible locations
• Strategically placed based on risk and coverage
• Maintained and inspected regularly
• Supported by properly trained personnel
• Assigned to a responsible program owner
This review process improves emergency response and helps ensure compliance with university and regulatory requirements.
Does Kentucky have a Good Samaritan law for AED use?
Yes. Kentucky has a Good Samaritan law that provides legal protection for individuals who use an AED in good faith during an emergency.
This protection applies as long as care is not provided in a grossly negligent manner.
If you have questions about AED use, legal requirements, or an existing AED in your building, contact Occupational Health & Safety for assistance and guidance.
AED Requirements and Responsibilities
If a department acquires an AED, the following requirements must be met:
• Notify local emergency services (911/dispatch) of the AED location and type
• Ensure individuals expected to use the AED are properly trained in CPR and AED use
• Maintain and test the AED according to manufacturer guidelines
• Ensure the AED program is overseen by a licensed physician
• Report AED use to local emergency services and the overseeing physician as soon as possible after an event
OHS can assist departments in meeting these requirements and maintaining compliance with applicable regulations.
